IT Patchwork Infrastructure Results In a Loss of Productivity of up to 40 Percent
Working with different software generations within a company is difficult to handle, especially for IT managers. At first sight it seems as if there are only two options for IT managers: Either they launch a new software generation ad hoc or they implement the software solutions gradually and by this risk a loss of productivity. Both options are very expensive. But besides these two options there is a more efficient and innovative possibility at a reduced rate, which makes a liaison of all interests realizable – pre-owned software.
For many companies Office programs are the most important applications on desktops. They allow improved performances, which have a positive effect in competitive situations. This amortizes the investment in these applications fast. Nevertheless, IT managers often decide on activities, which turn advantages to disadvantages.
Due to small IT budgets, new software generations can only occur step by step. “This salami attack leads to a higher effort of administration and training”, explains Boris Vöge, executive of preo Software AG, specialized in software remarketing. The alternative solution is to recapitalize your old software licenses and to purchase the new ones as pre-owned software licenses. If different departments use different software generations this often leads to functionality problems and finally to a loss of efficiency. Additionally new product features can be used only peripherally. This affects especially the cooperation of single employees, cooperating groups and controlling and administration of internal processes or of processes of the company network.
Difficult balancing act
It is always difficult to come up to the different interests of every party. Especially in case of a comprehensive implementation of a new Office generation IT managers and IT deciders have to cope with different demands. In addition to budget constraints always changing demands on business processes in particular are difficulties managers have to handle. Wherever imponderability appears, IT deciders are constantly at a risk to fall into a strategy trap. Because of that it is of high importance to compare the life cycle of software solutions to the structural and organizational development of the company, steadily. IT managers have to organize both sectors accurately to guarantee an optimized usage of the resources.
For this reason, Boris Vöge advises all IT managers to use new, innovative acquisition models, such as preo transfer model of pre-owned software licenses, as a key to long-term strategic success. Lots of practical experiences demonstrate that the usage of alternative acquisition models in software licenses is realizable.
Practical solutions
preo Software AG experienced a lot of projects, where a mixture of different software generations lead the customers to less productivity. “Often, we find two or three Office generations in one company”, explains Vöge. “Such a patchwork infrastructure leads to a decrease of productivity up to 40 percent”, says Vöge summing up numerous projects. preo Software AG offers an alternative:
preo Software AG’s competence model is a successful and well established method of software remarketing. In this way companies are able to sell their unused or not any longer needed software licenses to preo Software AG and by this refinance their new software licenses. Companies can save up to 70 percent by purchasing their new software as pre-owned software licenses by preo Software AG. Thereby it is very easy for companies to act efficiently when switching to a new Office generation. Productivity and cost traps are no longer occurring problems for companies, who want to implement a new software generation.
„Users benefit from this innovative model in three ways“, notes Vöge. „First of all, the patchwork structure and the associated losses in the productivity are avoided. Plus, the old licenses refinance the ‘new’ software. Third advantage: The integration of a new Office generation raises the efficiency in the company.“
